Law Firm DLA Piper Hires Veteran to Expand Johannesburg Finance Practice

DLA Piper has appointed a new legal director to its Johannesburg finance, projects and restructuring team.

Amelia Heeger joins the firm after a 23-year legal career in which she has developed a mix of experience or working in-house and in private practice. Prior to spending the last two year as a freelance legal adviser, she worked in-house for eight years at South Africa’s Rand Merchant Bank.

Before her in-house switch, she was a partner at Baker McKenzie for two years, having previously spent 13 years at Werksmans Attorneys in Johannesburg, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Among other things she has advised on the refinancing of various projects under South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Programme.

The firm’s latest Johannesburg hire follows that of financial services regulatory lawyer Bridget King in 2021 and insolvency and restructuring lawyer Nicola Nolan in 2020.

Jackie Pennington, head of finance, projects and restructuring, South Africa said Heeger’s appointment will “strengthen the finance, projects and restructuring team in Johannesburg and bring significant value to clients navigating issues in real time as part of our global team.”
