ING Taps Fortis Alum to Lead Asia Sustainable Finance

ING has appointed a veteran of Fortis’ transportation and strategic development teams to lead sustainable finance in Asia Pacific.

Martijn Hoogerwerf has been named head of sustainable finance Asia Pacific, effective last month, the Netherlands-based banker ING said in a press release Friday.

He joined ING’s sustainable finance APAC team in 2019, ING said, adding he has more than 10 years of experience in the sustainable finance markets, taking on climate-related investment and advisory roles, the release said. Previously, he was on Fortis’ transportation and logistics and strategic development teams, focusing on expanding wholesale banking in Asia, the release said, noting Fortis has merged with ABN Amro.

Anju Abrol, head of Wholesale Banking Asia Pacific said in the statement: “Corporates in the region are placing greater emphasis on climate action and ESG issues. This is clearly evident especially in the last year, where the number of sustainability deals we backed in Asia Pacific doubled on a year-on-year basis. I’m confident that Martijn will make a big contribution to the overall objective of helping clients in the region achieve their sustainability goals.”

Hoogerwerf, who will be based in Singapore, will report to Ana Carolina Oliveira, who is temporarily global head of sustainable finance, and regionally to Catherine Low, who is head of lending and transaction services APAC, ING said.
