The stated goal from Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte is to spend £35 billion ($52 billion) across a wider climate agenda including the transition to hydrogen but also measures such as insulation programs and infrastructure spending.

Rutte is backing a project at the Port of Rotterdam in which Shell aims to generate hydrogen from wind turbines in the North Sea, while the country also wants to import hydrogen from Australia.

“We will be able to produce in the Netherlands hypothetically about 50 per cent of our needs by 2030,” de Bourbon de Parme said.

“The other 50 per cent we will need to import. One of the studies has calculated that the Netherlands will import through the Port of Rotterdam about 70 per cent of the needs of Europe.”

The Netherlands government estimates the country has 240 companies working on hydrogen related technology.
