A well-known football finance expert has told Manchester United what impact their decision to terminate a deal with Russian airline Aeroflot will have.
Due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the Premier League giants have ended their association with the company.
The agreement was due to expire this year.
A statement from United read: “In light of events in Ukraine, we have withdrawn Aeroflot’s sponsorship rights.
“We share the concerns of our fans around the world and extend our sympathies to those affected.”
Aeroflot were prevented from flying into the UK after Russia invaded Ukraine early on Thursday morning.
In response to United cancelling their partnership with Aeroflot, football finance expert Kieran Maguire has moved to explain what impact that decision will have – praising the club in the process.
He told Football Insider : “It would be difficult for Aeroflot to sue Manchester United.
“That is especially true given that Aeroflot has been banned from the UK by the Government. They have effectively stepped in. Manchester United have done the right thing. They would suffer reputational damage if they continued the relationship.”
Aeroflot started sponsoring United in 2013 and the now-terminated deal was renewed in 2017 by now-CEO Richard Arnold, who previously served as the club’s group managing director.
